Nations are known for their culture, that's why no nation compromises on their cultural values and traditions.
Like every civilization of the world indus civilization has also some cultural traditions, values, behaviors and wearings. Well known of them is Sindhi ajrak.
Sindhi ajrak occupies high dignity in Sindhi culture. Ajrak is almost used in every occasion of sindhis, presented to loved ones or person who is highly respected as gift, let it be weddings, funerals, cultural events or formal gatherings.
Ajrak is unique form of block printed shawls in which special designs are produced on fabric by using wood block stamps, ajrak is almost three to five meters long and it takes ten to fifteen days to complete.
Ajrak is made allover sindh but matiari's ajrak is famous and demanded allover sindh.
First white cotton is wet in water for whole night, next day it is left to dry ,second night same ajrak is wet in water with the mixture of washing soap,mustard oil ,lemon,wastage of camel. next day it is left again to dry and then taken to any river or nearer lake for washing, this process continues for four times which takes five days, in their language this process is called kasaai!!
Second process is of printing this process contains three steps in which wood block stamps are used for printing, wood stamps are of different designs. A set of these stamps cost fifty thousand to one lakh,different dyes are used in printing like lime, glue,alichar and alum.
When printing process is done ajrak again is taken to river and washed for two to three hours.
Then it is boiled with alichar,saakun for three to four hours and again is washed. Now ajrak is in final step, this step is called mina(مينا) in which ajrak is given it's last colour and contrasts using glue,alum,indigo,Caustic and potassium are used.
At last it is again washed and then it is left in open air to dry .
Various designs of ajraks are in market but average price is 2500 to 5000 but if someone orders desired design or good fabric quality price goes up to 10 to 15 thousands.
Thousands of people are directly or indirectly connected with this industry only in matiari district.
Approximately 90 to 100 ajrak factories are working in district Where these labourers proves that they still love their culture and they will be!!!!!
