Problems of Thar

“Be the change you want to see in the world”. This statement clearly indicates that if one wants to change something, he/she has to adopt that change first. But these questions often floats around me ‘are we really doing it?’ Do we really care about our people? Do we care how people are suffering? Do we care about the problems that the people of Thar are facing? I am afraid to say we do not.
One of the biggest problems the people of Thar are facing is the shortage of water. There is a limited groundwater which is pretty much the only source of water for the people of Thar. It has a high concentration of salt and minerals which is dangerous for humans. Even though the Government launched various schemes of installing tube wells, hand pumps and wind mills, but they seemed to fail due to social, economic and technical reasons. Millions have been invested on ground-water exploitation, but they have been unsuccessful due to high cost of these projects till now. So the only effective source of water is dug-wells. Villagers across the land spend hours to fetch approximately 60 litres of water from wells.
With the shortage of water there comes the scarcity of food. Due to high concentration of salt in water, water is harmful for both humans and livestock. It seems impossible for farmers to grow crops and vegetable which, in turn, results in under-nutrition among children, women and the aged.
According to Dunya News, around 483 children were admitted to hospitals owing to shortage of food. A number of children breathe their last due to hunger.
Owing to very limited sources of earning, men, women and even children are forced to work in mines. However, workers are constantly exploited with low salaries. As there are unsafe working conditions which, consequently, results in many accidents that occur throughout the year.
To sum up, it is incumbent upon the Government to take pragmatic measures and implement them in letter and spirit in order to save the precious souls of the part of Sindh province Thar. It is time we had better take a stand and witness frequent demonstration for the attainment of their fundamental and basic necessities of life. If the civil society does not raise their eyebrows nor do they raise their voice, there will be another tragic wave of deaths of people of Thar who are intellectually and politically enlightened. They are very talented and arduous people, but the need of the time is to stand up and fight for their rights. I believe it is the best service to fight for the rights of the people because to serve man is to serve God.
There will be no exaggeration if I say ‘Humanity is the best religion’, because all the world religions have spread the message of serving the humanity. It is hoped that the think tank including the civil society will show their concern on this serious issue and will assist these people from all perspectives.

The civil society needs to raise the voice against every injustice against the people of Thar. In this connection, they need to spread awareness among these people for the attainment of their rights. Also they need to educate them. The most impoetantly, the civil society should give tough time to the incumbent govt in order to pay proper concentration to these people who highly deserve to be served in best ways. It is time the govt materialized the practical version for their rights.
