Pakistani dramas are claimed to be on number one position and they surely have maintained their position. But, now it seems like they are losing their charm which might be the cause of their decline in future.
There are more than just one factors which can be the reason for the loss of this charm. The very first factor is ‘ change in script-writing’ over the years.
Pakistani drama industry has given us great classics like ‘ Khuda ki Basti' (1969) focusing on social issues of society, which was also introduced on the syllabi of drama academies in India and around Europe. ‘Alpha Bravo Charlie’ (1998) directed by Shoaib Mansoor, was an action and thriller drama that revolves around three friends who have just joined the army. ‘Ainakwala Jin' (1993) was a comedy drama, which soon became very popular and the characters as well, that they were invited to perform at Shaukat Khanam Hospital in front of the patients and none other than Princess Diana, when she visited Pakistan in 1996. ‘Tanhaiyyan' (1985) was first drama to portray to young working women. These are just a few of many classics with great storyline. Back then storylines severed variety unlike today's dramas having same saas-bahu fights, highlighting issues of marriage and divorce. Most of the dramas have elite class heroes falling for a middle-class girls who has no career goals.
Pakistani serials gained fame for their realistic storyline within a few episode, but now it is totally opposite, they have increased the episodes and have adopted this new style of storyline which seems unrealistic.
No doubt there still are some dramas left which helps the industry to maintain its position, but just that is not enough. As there are so many dramas running on so many channels that only a few dramas cannot make up for them. And that brings us to the next factor that is ‘ quantity over quality'. Before there was just one channel Pakistan Television (PTV), all the dramas were aired on this one channel and the focus was ‘quality' but now there is a race for TRP only. Every channel has increased the quantity that is the number of dramas. And if there is any worth-watching drama it has to compete with the crowd of dramas. Then come the dramas which are aired once in a week featuring big celebrities with lots of glamour.
Today Pakistani dramas hardly show any lighter side of life. They only focus on the sufferings that the female lead faces after marriage or maybe just suffering besides marriage. Then they explain it with the statements like this the part of our society. But, let's not forget the first purpose of any drama or soap or play that is ‘to entertain. Today dramas entertain less and stress out more.
If this remains the condition then Pakistani dramas will soon completely lose their charm.
